Pregnancy Massage
Your body's doing something massive.
Everything hurts in new ways. Your back. Your hips. Your feet. Everything.
Pregnancy massage helps. Proper, trained hands that understand pregnant bodies and know how to work with them safely.
What Actually Is Pregnancy Massage?
Bodywork adapted for pregnant bodies. Different positioning (side-lying, propped up - not flat on your front or back). Different techniques that are safe for pregnancy. Different pressure suited to changing bodies.
Your therapist focuses on areas that commonly ache during pregnancy - lower back, hips, legs, shoulders, neck. They avoid areas and techniques that aren't appropriate during pregnancy.
Different therapists bring different backgrounds - some focus on pain relief, others on relaxation and nervous system support. Most blend both.
The common thread: they understand pregnancy. How bodies change. What's safe. What helps.
Suitable from second trimester onwards.
Why Pregnancy Massage Helps
Your body's carrying extra weight in places it wasn't designed to carry it. Your centre of gravity has shifted. Hormones are loosening your joints. Everything aches.
Pregnancy massage eases the specific discomforts of growing a human. Lower back pain from the extra weight out front. Hip pain from your pelvis preparing for birth. Leg cramps. Swollen feet and ankles.
But it's not just about pain. It's about receiving care when you're spending so much energy growing someone else. About being touched with skill and gentleness. About an hour where you're looked after.
People come for back pain, hip discomfort, stress relief, swelling, or just because they need to be cared for.
What to Expect
You'll lie on your side, supported by cushions and bolsters. Your therapist might have you switch sides partway through to work both sides of your body.
They'll work on areas that need it - back, hips, legs, wherever you're holding tension. The pressure is adapted for pregnancy - firm enough to be effective, gentle enough to be safe.
No lying flat on your back for extended periods. No lying on your front (obviously). Just supported positions that let your body relax whilst being worked on.
After, you'll feel relief. Lighter. Less achy. Like your body got a break from carrying all that weight.
Drink water. Rest if you need to. Let your body integrate the work.
Who Pregnancy Massage Is For
Anyone growing a human and dealing with the physical reality of that.
Suitable from second trimester for most people. If you're having complications, check with your midwife first. If you're high-risk, your therapist might ask for medical clearance.
You don't need severe pain to book. Prevention is better than waiting until you're in agony.
Practices That Work Together
Pregnancy massage complements other pregnancy support. Combine with prenatal yoga for movement, preparation work for birth, or regular massage throughout pregnancy.
Massage
Massage releases tension you can't reach yourself. Knots in your shoulders. Tightness in your hips. Proper bodywork from therapists who know what they're doing.
Prenatal Yoga
Yoga adapted for pregnancy. Movement that's safe for your changing body. Connection with your baby. Preparation for birth that's actually useful.
